I hope to connect individuals and their loved ones with accurate information regarding mental health and substance abuse issues so they can make the best treatment decisions. The information should be easy to understand and evidence-based. It is crucial to offer specific steps readers can take to successfully recover.
About
Susanne Reed is a freelance writer with expertise in mental and behavioral health. She has served as an adjunct professor in Psychology for Penn State University and Allegany College of Maryland. Previously, she spent over 20 years as a counselor and therapist for those with mental health and substance use disorders. Throughout her years as a counselor, she conducted needs assessments, individual and group therapy sessions, family therapy, intensive outpatient programs, dual diagnosis therapy, and disorder-specific groups. She often used cognitive-behavioral therapy and positive psychology techniques integrated with a person’s holistic and alternative therapies.
Her philosophy for behavioral health is that it is crucial to treat mental and physical health problems simultaneously for a person to avoid relapse and have more success in recovery. Educating the public, individuals, family members, and loved ones about various mental health and substance abuse disorders is important. The more someone understands their issues, the more confident and motivated they will be to seek help. Susanne feels education can help break down barriers, stereotypes, and stigmas, leading more people to treatment. With the right treatment, people can learn the skills they need to be successful.
